Whitening is a great way to help your child celebrate the end of their time in braces or aligners. It's an added confidence boost that gives them a reason to share their incredible new smile.
Let’s talk about braces for teens
This is difficult for a parent to evaluate. Even if your child’s teeth look straight, there may be problems that require the expertise of an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends your child consult with an orthodontist by age 7.
We offer free initial consultations where we can assess your child and offer any recommendations. Early detection is best to prevent future difficult treatment for your child. Many problems are resolved on their own, but we can help guide you whatever your needs!
Each child's dental issues are different, so their treatment times are different. We will evaluate your child with a thorough examination and dental imaging to determine exactly what treatment they need and how long it will take. On average, treatment times run 12-24 months.
Your child will have food restrictions with braces, but they are TEMPORARY. Once their braces treatment is done, they can go back to eating these foods.
Patients will need to avoid foods that are crunchy (tortilla chips, popcorn), chewy (bagels, sugared gum), hard (hard candies, ice), or sticky (saltwater taffy, caramels). You can find a full list on our blog page.
We offer Invisalign and Spark clear aligners, but both require a lot of responsibility and commitment on your child's part so they are fully effective. Clear aligners must be worn at least 22 hours a day, and because they're removable, many teens struggle to stick with this commitment fully, which can prolong treatment time and reduce effectiveness.

Yes, your child will need to wear retainers at night after orthodontic treatment. Retainers are the final step: maintaining their beautiful new smile. As our doctors love to say, “Retainers are worn at nighttime for a lifetime!" Long-term nightly wear is necessary because teeth can move at any age, even in people who have never had orthodontic treatment.
