It’s exciting to get your braces, but we know you probably have a million questions about them. Do braces hurt? What can you eat with braces? Do braces change your face?

Appel Orthodontics has heard these questions and many more. We’re always happy to answer any questions you have about your orthodontic care, but we thought we’d answer a few of the most common questions we get.

Do Braces Hurt?

Your teeth and gums may be a bit sore right after you get your braces. This is common, but it will fade after a few days once your teeth get used to moving. You might also be a bit sore after an adjustment.

We recommend you stick to soft foods the first few days after getting braces. Mashed potatoes, protein shakes, macaroni and cheese, and other such foods will help. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce any pain and swelling.

What Can I Eat With Braces?

You can eat lots of things with braces! Meats, cooked vegetables, cheeses, ice cream, soft cookies, pasta, soft breads — you have many great options

You will need to avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy. This includes tortilla chips, hard candies, ice, bagels, toffee, gum, popcorn, and raw, hard vegetables.

Are There Different Types of Braces?

Yes, there are different types of braces. We offer metal braces similar to the traditional braces your parents may have worn. Unlike their braces, today’s metal braces are smaller and more efficient, moving your teeth faster and better than ever!

We also offer clear ceramic braces. The clear braces brackets are closer in color to your natural teeth, making them harder to see. They’re a great alternative to traditional metal braces.

How Long Will I Wear Braces?

Most people wear braces an average of 12-24 months, but your treatment time will depend on the number and severity of your dental issues. Treatment times are different for each patient.

We will create your treatment plan during your first visit and let you know how long you will wear your braces. That way, you’ll know how long your treatment will take before you begin.

How Do I Clean Braces?

It may seem like brushing with braces is tricky, but it’s easier than you may think. We recommend using an electric toothbrush. The moving bristles can get in and around your brackets easier than a manual toothbrush.

How do you floss with braces? A floss threader can weave dental floss over or under your archwire and through your teeth. It will make it much easier to floss with braces.

There are other tools you can use. A water flosser can get food particles out of brackets and from between your teeth when used in addition to dental floss. Mouthwash can provide extra protection to your enamel and give you minty breath.

A word of warning: Don’t use whitening products during braces. The whitening agent won’t be able to penetrate the bonding agent holding your braces brackets in place. You’ll end up with dark spots there once your braces are off. Wait to whiten your teeth once your braces treatment is done.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign and Spark clear aligners are alternatives to braces for those who don’t want braces and are willing to take on the responsibility of keeping up with removable aligners. Like braces, clear aligners use gentle pressure to move your teeth. Because they’re made of a special clear material, they’re harder to see on your teeth.

Not every patient is a good candidate for Invisalign or Spark. Those with severe dental issues would benefit more from using braces. We can tell you whether you’re a good candidate for clear aligners during your first visit.

Am I Too Old for Braces?

Definitely not! You are not too old for braces because you’re never too old for a healthy smile. Oral health is vital to overall health. Repairing your bite can reduce headaches and jaw pain, improve breathing and speech, and make it easier to chew, which improves digestion. Straighter teeth are also easier to clean, reducing your chances of tooth decay and gum disease.

So visit Appel Orthodontics in Philadelphia, PA, no matter what your age. We will be happy to treat you with braces or clear aligners and improve your oral health!

Can I Play Sports With Braces?

Yes, you can play sports with braces, but we strongly recommend you wear a mouthguard when you play. This is particularly important if you’re playing sports that could involve getting hit in the face with an object, such as tennis, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse.

Do Braces Change Your Face?

Braces can change the shape of your face, particularly if you have a strong overbite, underbite, or deep bite. The change will seem subtle, but your before and after braces photos will likely show a big difference.

Can You Finance Braces or Invisalign?

Yes! Appel Orthodontics believes finances shouldn’t stand in the way of great oral health. That’s why we work with so many insurance companies to help cover the cost of your braces treatment.

What happens if you don’t have insurance or your insurance only covers part of your treatment? We have other financing options to help make your braces affordable. We offer zero-interest, in-house financing with low down payments. We can even extend your payments up to 36 months, which lowers your monthly payment.

We want to work with you to make your treatment affordable because everyone should be able to afford a beautiful, healthy smile.
